Community in Covington, Louisiana, Cleans Up After Ida
Storm Ida made landfall as a Category 4 hurricane in coastal Louisiana on Sunday, August 29, bringing maximum sustained winds of 150 mph, the National Hurricane Center said.
Louisiana residents spent Monday morning surveying the damage and working to clear roads of debris and trees.
Covington resident Kalisa recorded video of her community working together to clear two large pine trees that fell during the storm. “Miraculously,” she told Storyful, no one in her community was hurt, but the street was without power on Monday. Kalisa’s husband, Chip, is driving the Jeep in the video, she said…….
ST. TAMMANY PARISH GOVERNMENT OFFERS UPDATE ON HURRICANE IDA RECOVERY
ST. TAMMANY, LA. – St. Tammany Parish Government provides an update on the recovery efforts following Hurricane Ida.
“We are relieved to see our rivers are going to crest below forecasted levels,” said President Mike Cooper. “We can now shift our concerns into recovery and restoring our Parish to normalcy.”
The rivers St. Tammany Parish Government have been monitoring, with the exception of the Bogue Chitto and Pearl River, crested last night at levels below projected.
The lower levels are mostly attributable to the low amount of rainfall received after the initial pass of the storm……………

METAIRIE, La. (WGNO) — Hurricane Ida was one of the strongest storms to make landfall in Louisiana. The Category 4 storm hit on the same date Hurricane Katrina ravaged Louisiana and Mississippi 16 years earlier, coming ashore about 45 miles west of where Category 3 Katrina first struck land.
The office of Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards said Ida caused “catastrophic” damage to the power grid, forcing hospitals, businesses, and private residents to rely on generators or go without refrigeration or air conditioning even as temperatures soar to close to 90 degrees…….
‘It was pretty bizarre’: Tree crashes through roof of Covington home
COVINGTON, La. —
A home in Covington in St. Tammany Parish sustained significant damage when a tree crashed through the roof in the aftermath of Hurricane Ida.
The homeowner told WDSU that a large oak tree crashed through the roof in the kitchen area. No one was injured.
Damage assessment continues across Louisiana after category 4 Hurricane Ida moved across the state, knocking out power to hundreds of thousands of people and leaving a path of destruction………….
Hurricane Ida ‘was terrifying,’ says north country native now living in Louisiana
COVINGTON, Louisiana (WWNY) – More than a million homes and businesses are without power after Hurricane Ida. We spoke with one Louisiana man with north country ties who says this storm was no joke.
“It was terrifying and by the time it got terrifying for us, it was too late to leave, so we didn’t have a choice,” said Cameron Miller.
Miller is originally from the Nicholville area in St. Lawrence County. He now lives north of New Orleans with his wife and son in an area that saw extensive damage.
“It looked like tornadoes hit every single street; there is trees down everywhere still. It’s going to take months for us to recover from it,” he said………..

Hurricane Ida wallops south Louisiana, St. Tammany not spared
Hurricane Ida, a Category 4 storm packing 150 mph winds and a 19-foot wall of water, lashed south Louisiana on Aug. 29, leaving behind a swath of wreckage among the most destructive in recorded history.
The storm made landfall near Port Fourchon exactly 16 years to the day that Hurricane Katrina inundated coastal Louisiana and Mississippi. Only Hurricane Laura in 2020, Katrina in 2005 and the “Last Island Hurricane” of 1856 packed an equally devastating punch to Louisiana, and as with those storms, recovery is expected to be counted in months, rather than days…………
Ida causing housing crisis as countless families search for temporary homes
HAMMOND, La. — Hurricane Ida caused a housing crisis for tens of thousands of families in Southeast Louisiana. They are essentially homeless and struggling to find a new place to live.
Ashante Robinson is one of them. She can’t find any open apartments or rental homes.
“I’m just trying to find a roof over my head,” she said………..
